Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has reaffirmed his commitment to the demolition of unlawful structures in Abuja. He has also dismissed complaints and claims of blackmail regarding his actions.
According to Wike, the demolitions are directed at properties that were built illegally on grounds that are held by the government, and the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) would not be deterred from acting in accordance with the law no matter how much pressure is used.
Wike made this statement on Thursday, November 12, at the FCTA Secretariat in Abuja, during the handover of operational vehicles to security agencies. "We are not afraid of blackmail," Wike stated. The city of Abuja is home to a large number of land grabbers. The time has arrived for some of us to relax and take it easy.
Allow heaven to collapse; it would be even better if heaven fell right now so that we would not have to go through the process of fasting once more in order to reach paradise. There has been a recent increase in the efforts that the FCTA is making to demolish unauthorised structures that are located in estates and shanties all throughout the capital city.
The actions taken have resulted in demonstrations and pushback from the people who have been affected as well as civil society organisations. Wike has not wavered in his views, despite the criticism that has been issued. According to what he said, "We would put a stop to anyone who believes they will take government land for any reason without formal approval."
If we were to look at your face, we would not. You could choose to become a television personality or a civil rights activist if you so desire. Every wrongdoing is wrongdoing, and no amount of extortion will be able to stop us. During the same time that the minister was making his remarks, the Senate issued a directive to investigate the ongoing demolitions.
As a result of substantial public concern regarding the consequences of these actions, the upper chamber of the National Assembly has appointed a committee to investigate the subject. Wike's statements highlight the administration's determination to confront land grabbing and enforce strict compliance with Abuja's planning regulations, despite the fact that the issue surrounding the demolitions continues to increase.
