Labour Party Slams Defections to APC, Vows Legal Action

The Deputy Minority Leader of the House of Representatives who is popularly known as George Ibezimako Ozodinobi has strongly criticized members of the Labour Party (LP) who recently switched to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

On the 5th of December, a group of four Labour Party politicians identified as Chinedu Okere (Owerri Municipal/Owerri North/Owerri West), Mathew Donatus (Kaura, Kaduna), Akiba Bassey (Calabar Municipal/Odukpani), and Esosa Iyawe (Oredo, Edo) made it known that they are now with the ruling party. They blamed their decision on unresolved internal disputes within the Labour Party in a letter read by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen during plenary.

The Labour Party members are not happy about what the four politicians did. When Ozodinobi was addressing the House, he made it clear that it was disappointing as he expressed disappointment and warned his colleagues about the consequences of their decision. He said that their move to the ruling APC was a step toward uncertainty and maybe filled with regret, implying that the grass may not be greener on the other side.

The Labour Party members also denounced the defections, describing them as both disappointing and unjustifiable. Even Obiora Ifoh who is recognized as the Party spokesman criticized that what the politicians did is contrary to democratic principles. He also announced plans to take legal action in accordance with the terms of the 1999 Constitution and the 2022 Electoral Act. Based on reports, the LP allegedly made a decision to take the politicians to court.

Across social media, a lot of Labor Party supporters have equally expressed dissatisfaction through the comments section of several posts concerning the Labour Party and the ruling All Progressive Congress.

Although the story has raised more general questions regarding internal stability and party loyalty, the Labour Party has reaffirmed its determination to take quick action to address these issues.
